HKEX recently featured IMC in their Markets in Motion series, exploring how leading market participants use the Orion platform to trade in Hong Kong.

Below, we expand on what that partnership means and why long-term commitment to a market goes hand in hand with the infrastructure that supports it.
What it means to be a liquidity provider
IMC is a global, research-driven quantitative trading firm and liquidity provider on many of the world’s major exchanges, including HKEX. As a liquidity provider, we are present continuously, quoting two-sided markets, supporting price formation, and helping ensure that investors of all types can access the market when they need to, at competitive prices.
Our commitment in Hong Kong is real and longstanding. We trade across exchange-listed products and invest heavily in the people, technology, and exchange relationships needed to do that reliably. Being a stable liquidity provider is not something we simply claim. It is something we operationalise every day, in the interests of the whole market.
For us, stability is not a static concept. It is reflected in our ability to remain active through different market environments, including periods of heightened volatility, when liquidity can be most valuable to the participants we serve.
Infrastructure that supports resilient markets
Great market infrastructure benefits everyone who participates in it, and for IMC, operating on HKEX’s Orion platform enables us to fulfil our role as a liquidity provider more effectively. Markets periodically go through periods of heightened activity, and these are exactly the moments when participants most need the market to function smoothly, and when the quality of the underlying infrastructure is felt most acutely.
Our experience trading on Orion across a range of conditions has been consistently positive. The platform has remained stable and reliable, giving us and the broader market confidence that trading can continue to function well regardless of the environment.
A long-term perspective on market participation
As the market continues to develop, the relationship between infrastructure quality and liquidity provision will only become more important. HKEX’s ongoing investment in Orion is a clear signal of its own long-term commitment to keeping Hong Kong’s markets competitive and world-class.
For IMC, a long-term approach means ongoing investment in its people, research and technology, and a commitment to operating consistently across market cycles. In combination with a robust exchange infrastructure, this helps create an environment where markets can function efficiently in both stable and more demanding conditions. We are grateful to HKEX for the opportunity to share our perspective in the Markets in Motion series, and we look forward to continuing to build on our partnership in the years ahead.
