Engineer Alex on moving his life Down Under.
Engineer Alex made the move from Paris to Sydney six years ago. Although relocating to the other side of the world with his wife and baby may have seemed a little daunting at first, IMC’s support throughout the process helped ensure the ease of the transition.
Uncovering an opportunity with IMC
Having welcomed a new baby into the world, Alex and his wife reconsidered whether Paris would be the right place for their growing family to live. Looking a little closer towards his wife’s home country of New Zealand, Alex discovered an opportunity at IMC and decided to apply.
While he was initially apprehensive about working in the financial space, the experience of his first interview with the IMC team saw him realise that there was potential to work on exciting projects with a team of great people while enjoying a good work-life balance.
“I realised that I could be working on interesting stuff in beautiful surroundings. The people I met during the interview further boosted my conviction that this was the right choice for me,” Alex explains.
Making a move abroad easier
After accepting his role, IMC’s relocation experts, who support IMC employees as they settle into their new hometown, assisted Alex and his family in their move to Sydney.
“IMC made moving to a different country with a one-year-old so much easier. They paid for our accommodation while we got settled and helped us navigate finding somewhere permanent to live.”
With much of the logistics of the move taken care of, Alex was able to focus on getting up to speed with the work. He joined the Strategy team, which delivers high-performance software for trading algorithms, option pricing, simulation frameworks, and data analysis and visualisation.
“As a software engineer, I’ve had the chance to learn everything about financial markets, which has made my job so much more interesting,” he says. “I enjoy working in the dynamic, fast-paced environment that delivers a steady stream of challenges to keep me on my toes.”
Getting settled into his new role was made easier by IMC, too, with the wider team providing any support Alex needed. “That's definitely one thing where IMC stands apart compared to what I've seen before, the support that you get as an individual and as part of IMC is really amazing,” he says.
“It's a good place to work, and I find that it manages to be externally competitive while remaining internally collaborative. We are all keen to be the best, but not at the expense of our team members.”
Building a life in Sydney
Having now lived in Sydney for six years and welcoming three more children into his family in that time, Alex feels right at home in Australia’s largest city, personally and professionally.
“Sydney is a great place to raise a family. It’s so safe, and it has this incredible access to nature you don’t get anywhere else. Plus, the weather actually lets you enjoy it,” he shares.
“It’s been a great move for my family and me, and my career. I’m excited for what’s to come.”
