Learn how two Launchpad participants turned their experience into a summer internship with IMC.
For some, Launchpad is more than just an introduction—it’s the first step toward a career in trading. For two students from the University of Texas at Austin, this experience went beyond learning; it sparked their passion for the industry and solidified their decision to return to IMC this summer for our 2025 Internship program.
Lance’s Perspective: Why He Chose Trading Over Consulting
In 2024, Lance was studying Computer Science and Philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin – set on a career in management consulting. The trading industry simply wasn’t on his radar until he was introduced to Launchpad by an IMC University Recruiter, which convinced him to explore a new direction. “I expected the industry to be competitive and individualistic, but IMC’s culture was the opposite – collaborative, dynamic, and focused on problem-solving.” When asked about why he changed his career trajectory to trading, Lance broke it down to three key takeaways.
Collaborative Environment. “I had a misconception that every trading firm in the industry was cutthroat, but IMC values teamwork and innovation. They collaborate intensely internally to compete effectively externally in the market.”
Meritocratic Culture. “At IMC, even interns are trusted with impactful projects that give them exposure to the production code base. The flat structure means your ideas matter from day one.”
Intellectual Challenge. “Trading sits at the intersection of math, software, and finance. To me, working in a field where every challenge presents new opportunities and challenges is incredibly exciting.”
Lance will join IMC for the Summer 2025 Software Engineer internship program, where he’ll accelerate his learning through classroom sessions, meaningful project work, and dedicated mentorship.
“I’ve learned a lot about trading and the technology that propels it since Launchpad, but I know the internship will be on a completely different level. I can’t wait to challenge myself and grow.”
How Isaac’s Experience at Launchpad Led to an Internship with IMC
Isaac, on the other hand, was already aware of careers in Quantitative Trading but learned of IMC’s Launchpad program for ambitious second-year students at a mixer event. “I’d heard about financial markets on campus and knew it was a highly technical field, but I wanted to see if it was the right fit for me. As I learned more, the role became more appealing.”
Launchpad provided Isaac with the clarity he needed.
“The desk shadowing experience gave us the opportunity to see a trader’s screen in real-time– what they were monitoring, how they divided their attention, and the decisions they were making.
Discussions with traders and engineers showed me how open-ended and dynamic the trader role is. Some traders focus on deep research and strategy development, while others specialize in execution. This distinction helped me better understand the different skill sets and opportunities within IMC’s trading team and see a potential path for myself in this industry.
Lastly, we participated in fast-paced trading simulations that forced me to think critically and adapt quickly. It gave me a real sense of what it’s like to make markets and manage risks.”
By the end of the program, Isaac was confident that he wanted to secure an internship and experience a realistic job preview. He will be joining IMC as a Quant Trader intern this summer.
“A career in quantitative trading is as fast-paced and dynamic as the markets we operate in,” says Isaac. “Yet many students don’t realize the breadth of opportunities in this field – or how intellectually stimulating and collaborative it really is. I’m grateful to have the opportunity to explore the industry under IMC’s mentorship – they invest a lot of care in cultivating the next generation of traders.”
For Isaac and Lance, Launchpad was more than an introduction – it set them on a path towards an IMC internship. They gained hands-on experience, connected with IMC professionals, and discovered a culture that challenges and supports growth.
